Gua sha, neck pain, acupuncture, nycGua Sha

A healing technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves using a smooth edged instrument to scrape the surface of the skin. Dr. Arya Nielsen, PhD conducted a study on the effectiveness of gua sha and how it can be used for healing.

Gua sha is typically performed over a large area of the body, like the back and neck area. Smooth unidirectional strokes are used to produce 'sha' or petechiae which are broken capillary blood vessels. According to studies, as the blood from the broken vessels are reabsorbed, the breakdown of hemoglobin upregulates certain chemicals that have anti-inflammatory properties.

Dr. Arya Nielson's conclusion states gua sha's therapeutic approach can obtain anti-inflammatory responses for acute inflammation and chronic illnesses.

Anti-inflammatory properties are able to help with conditions such as pain from injuries, headaches, fibromyalgia pain, fever, common cold, and asthma, among others.
